The Military Mutual has joined forces with the charity, Haig Housing, to support the Newton Heath Development in Manchester. Better known as ‘Veterans Village’ which features on the BBC DIY SOS ‘Homes for Veterans’ episode, presented by Nick Knowles. The initiative received some welcome help from Prince William and Prince Harry, who rolled up their sleeves to showcase their decorating skills.

We donated Buildings Cover for 18 houses within Veterans Village, as they underwent refurbishment. We will continue to support the project by providing free Buildings Cover to the military families living there.

Here’s a clip from DIY SOS ‘Homes for Veterans’…

“This project highlights not only the need to provide decent homes for our veterans and their families, but to support the people that we respect into the future, not just when the cameras are rolling.  Our support will not stop after the development phase. We’ve ensured that when they receive their keys, they will also continue to benefit from our support.” The Military Mutual Chairman, Sir Sebastian Roberts.

James Richardson, CEO Haig Housing commented: “This project is all about what we do, re-housing the ex-service community. To be involved in what has been an extraordinary coming together of social and private enterprise shows the passion towards the military family and the recognition that they desperately need and deserve all of our help. We are grateful to Manchester City Council who recognised the housing need and has provided the opportunity for us to regenerate these properties to provide a variety of housing options for the ex-service community. This will go a long way to bringing life back to the area and build a strong community built on trust, loyalty and a commitment to one another.”

Challenges facing serving and former serving members of the military

Insurance for the military has been and remains complex due to the nature of the job. This is put into sharp focus at the point of transition out of the military and into civilian life. Homes are often either under-insured or left completely unprotected with no insurance at all. This may be due to financial worries, a change in circumstances or simply forgetting to review the level of cover.

As no one can foretell the future, knowing your insurance will pay out when needed provides peace of mind and a sense of security against the unexpected. Don’t be a statistic; make sure you’re covered.
